Product Description:
This packet contains approx. 10 seeds. Tropical & palm-like in appearance the Cabbage Tree is a common feature of the New Zealand landscape. In Spring & Summer large heads of creamy sweetly scented flowers form above its canopy of long grass like leaves. It was an important plant to the early Maori the central buds as well as the base of the young leaves were eaten raw or roasted. It was said to taste like artichoke. The early settlers gave the name 'Cabbage Tree' to the Ti kouka because they use to boil and eat the young shoots The fibre of the leaf was also used for weaving because it was found stronger & more durable than flax. Easy to establish sculptural tree group for bold impact. Or as a striking tub plant on the patio deck or veranda.
Product Care:
Cover with plastic to conserve moisture. Remove plastic often to allow ventilation. Keep moist throughout the germination period. As seedlings grow provide increasing quantities of light and fresh air. New Zealand natives often take a little while to germinate. Please be patient they are worth the wait.
When to Sow:
Sow anytime indoors. Soak seed overnight. Spread seed between layers of a wet paper towel. Seal in a plastic bag with plenty of air space. Refrigerate for 6 weeks. Keep moist.
Where to Sow:
Best sown into a tray of quality seed raising mix.
Where to Grow:
Very adaptable. Grows just about anywhere. Does well in a damp corner where not much else will grow. Also tolerates exposed windy & salty conditions.
How to Sow:
Cover with a fine mix to a depth of 112 cm.
